The Dead Poets' Society (DPS) is a new club on campus whose main focus is literature appreciation; The club intends to appreciate literature contrary to how a student might in his English class. DPS' different style will incorporate such things as poetry readings and cultural excursions. DPS members' attitudes should also play a key role in establishing the club's new style of learning and appreciation of literature. The more positive thinking there is, the more that can be accomplished in a short amount of time, which allows more room for interesting activities. The challenges of the club may face are made known to potential members uponjoining. The DPS' constitution states, "those who join must be ready to take a journey of the mind through fine literature."
DPS plans to have a different theme for each month varying from the sonnets of Shakespeare to the works of Stephen King. The purpose of these themes is to acquaint members with a myriad of authors. Students planning to take the AP Literature test in spring would greatly benefit from joining this club, said advisor Rose Setten.
The Dead Poets' Society not only plans to appreciate literature but will fundraise for charities and programs which promote literacy in children and adults. They are also planning to organize a "pajama party" at the La Habra public library in the near future. The party involves DPS members reading and acting out books for young children who attend the library in their pajamas.
The club will hold its first official meeting on Thursday, November 2, in room 33. Anyone can attend this meeting and information regarding the club will be distributed.
