The school is currently considering the idea of block scheduling. This is something the teachers have been working on for eight years because they feel students will benefit from it. Meetings are currently being held after school to decide if block scheduling will occur.

Principal Jim Robinson is hoping to start a sub committee to go over the many options the school has to choose from. If the school decision is made to try block scheduling, the school must inform the district, parents and students.

Two major factors that must be dealt with when selecting block scheduling are not taking learning time away from the students and not increasing the cost to run the school.

“Positive aspects of having a block schedule are students can take more classes during the four years, go to a different class every other day, and have ... homework [in fewer subjects] each night with more time to work on it,” explained teacher Patricia Walker. Some negative aspects for students could be longer periods and fewer passing periods.

The reason the school is considering block scheduling is the hope that students will be able to focus more on their work and be able to take a wider variety of classes.

Robinson said, “We are currently in the process of going over the many options of the way the scheduling will be done, and I don’t like to think of it as block scheduling but as flexible scheduling.”

Teacher Kesten Blake said, “Block scheduling is a more efficient way of learning in school.” LHHS is the only school in the district that is currently considering block scheduling.
